Postdoctoral Fellowship in
Obesity and Behavioral HealthMassachusetts General Hospital
Harvard Medical SchoolThe Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School are offering a full-time, two-year Postdoctoral Fellowship in Obesity and Behavioral Health . Clinical and research activities of the fellowship are conducted under the auspices of the MGH Weight Center and the Department of Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. The MGH Weight Center specializes in the study of obesity and related disorders and the care of adults, adolescents and children with weight disorders. We are strongly committed to advancing the understanding of the causes, complications, and treatment of weight disorders. We believe that weight disorders must be treated by compassionate and knowledgeable professionals whose practice is consistent with the latest scientific developments. The center faculty includes psychologists, physicians, surgeons, dietitians and clinical investigators working as part of a multidisciplinary team. The fellowship encompasses specialized clinical training and applied clinical and/or basic research.
Clinical training includes evaluation of patients with weight and associated behavioral disorders, and providing short-term group and individual mental health treatment. Fellows function as fully-integrated members of the multidisciplinary team, working primarily with an outpatient population, with occasional inpatient consultations. The training program includes participation in weekly didactic sessions, including Obesity Medicine Grand Rounds and journal club, as well as individual and group supervision. Fellows also participate in a research program under the supervision of faculty members in the MGH Weight Center and are required to design and complete an independent research project. Examples of current research topics include prevention of childhood obesity, identification of psychological predictors of response to obesity treatments, the genetic basis of eating behaviors, the impact of stigma on obesity care, the impact of psychotropic medications on the economic burden of obesity, and the effects of weight loss surgery on taste perception, hunger, and satiety.
Clinical and supervision requirements for licensure are met by successful completion of this program. The two-year fellowship will begin in September 2008. Applicants must have a Ph.D. or Psy.D. from an accredited university and have successfully completed an APA-accredited internship by the start of the fellowship.
Candidates with previous clinical experience and/or applied research interests in obesity and/or associated behavioral disorders are strongly preferred. The application deadline is January 1, 2008. To apply, send a letter of interest, curriculum vitae , and three letters of reference to:
