Medical and Surgical Programs
Medical Management Program
Medical management programs at the MGH Weight Center are divided into four distinct phases. Each phase lasts 5 to 12 weeks but can be repeated as many times as necessary to ensure adequate support for each individual. In addition, each phase may be completed in a variety of treatment formats, reflecting the lifestyle, weight history, medical condition and specific needs of each patient.
- INITIATION PHASE
This is an intensive program to begin weight loss therapy. The Initiation Phase focuses on nutritional education and counseling, psychological preparation for weight loss, family support and introduction to lifestyle exercise. Medical and complementary therapies are included as appropriate for individual patients. Additional psychological support is offered to patients as needed, and we recently have initiated a distinct program focused on the management of binge eating disorders.
- CONTINUATION PHASE
This intensive program consolidates lifestyle changes necessary for long-term weight loss. This phase focuses on providing support, reinforcing lifestyle changes, and developing a safe and effective exercise program. Medical and complementary therapies are continued for appropriate individuals.
- MAINTENANCE PHASE
This ongoing program helps to maintain success achieved in the Initiation and Continuation Phases. This phase continues behavioral, nutritional, exercise and medical support, with varying emphasis, depending on individual needs. Perhaps the most critical component of the MGH Weight Center's program, the Maintenance phase allows us to provide life-long treatment of obesity and its complications.
- REINFORCEMENT PHASE
This is a specialized program for patients who require a period of more intensive support and intervention during the Maintenance Phase. The Reinforcement Phase is designed to support patients who: o begin to regain lost weight; o experience a period of increased stress; o develop complications from their excess weight.
MGH Weight Center Surgical Management Program
In addition to this phased medical management program, the MGH Weight Center provides weight loss surgery for appropriate patients. Our specialized surgical management programs are designed to maximize the benefits of weight loss surgery. They help prepare patients for the nutritional and psychological effects of surgery and support patients after surgery is completed.
Pediatric Program
"Childhood and adolescence are unique times in the lives of people who have a tendency to become overweight. Emotional support is particularly important so that self-esteem is not threatened. These are also times when lifestyle habits are established. Therefore, young people are particularly able to achieve long-term improvement in their weight and eating habits after a well-conceived intervention."Alison G. Hoppin, MD
Children and teenagers with weight disorders face unique challenges. The rapid hormonal changes of puberty strongly affect body shape, weight, appetite and emotions, making this a difficult time for weight control. Young people may be particularly sensitive to the effects of weight on their appearance and athletic performance. Our MGH Weight Center professionals recognize and respond to the special concerns of children and adolescents as we help them meet realistic goals for a healthy lifestyle and body weight. We strongly encourage the active involvement of parents, brothers, sisters and other close family members, as their participation is an essential part of providing successful care to our young patients.
